NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
There seems to be a severe problem facing New Castle school bus drivers.
There has been a drastic increase in drivers ignoring the “Stop” sign and guard bar on the front of the buses. This occurs more frequently with oncoming traffic.
There was an incident Dec. 10, in downtown New Castle where a school bus was discharging students at the YMCA. The attendant from the Y, the driver and monitor witnessed approximately 10 cars ignore these safety features.
The worst of this is one of the runners was a city bus. Something needs to be done before our city has another child severely injured or worse.
I suggest the possibility of a police officer randomly riding a school bus periodically and citing these offenders. Also, a police car could randomly follow a bus, periodically and stop these offenders immediately.
I was told traffic citations were not printed in the newspaper. Dogs without vaccinations or licenses, high grass, houses without proper house numbers visible can be printed in the paper, why can’t something as serious as ignoring safety features for our children be printed?
Maybe if enough were arrested, and consequences printed in the paper, other drivers might take notice and be more cautious. This is a very serious offense and should be handled as a serious matter.
Are our school students not important enough to be protected to and from school?
The bus company, police department and sheriff’s department should all work together and stop this occurrence. There are other issues regarding drivers passing buses on the right side of the roadway with a sheriff’s car two cars behind the bus and did nothing to stop this driver. This is also becoming a common occurrence.
