Scrap yard provides no benefit to New Castle

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

“Scrap yard business is a bad fit for the city” has me wondering: Will the location of the scrap yard/shredder business be more of a detriment to our city than a benefit?

Louis Sorbo, in the letter to The News, pointed out some of the disadvantages: located in a flood plain, violates government ordinances, short walk from the business district and state offices, noise and vibration, will cause traffic congestion, trucks will be hard on streets, bridges and roads.

In my opinion, these disadvantages far outweigh the few jobs and the revenue that this business will generate.

The high-tech equipment used in this type of operation does not require a large labor force. It does not create jobs; it eliminates them and, as a result, the wage tax is limited. It would be interesting how much property tax revenue Upstate Shredding LLC will generate for our city, school and county tax coffers. How does this compare to what was paid in taxes by the previous owners?

After reading the letter and watching video, I have come to the conclusion that the scrap yard/shredder business is not a good fit for New Castle, in the Jefferson Street location. In a more remote location it would be ideal.

It would be interesting to see where the facilities are located in the Jamestown, Scranton, Rochester areas and how the residents feel about the facilities.

Those who care about our city’s future need to view the video on the following link:

Have you held or will you hold a garage/yard sale this year?

I have and it was a success! It's a great way to get rid of some junk and make a little extra pocket money.
I have, but it didn't go over so well. Better luck next time?
I haven't yet, but I plan to.
I haven't and I don't plan to. It's not for me.
