Romney commanded guard as state governor

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

Concerning the fact former Gov. Mitt Romney never served in the military, I share these thoughts.

As a governor, as he was of Massachusetts in a matter of respect, he was the commander-in-chief of the National Guard of his state during his tenure. He had the right to call out the National Guard for any emergency that was necessary.

President Obama never served in the military either and as a state senator and U.S. senator, did he have any authority over the military until he was elected as president?

Next to former President Jimmy Carter, Obama has been the worst commander-in-chief there has been in decades. And yes, I do know.

I am a United States Air Force Vietnam veteran and served under several presidents from 1971 to 1980 active duty and the reserve from 1980 to 1983.

I was stationed at Hurlburt Field Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach during the Iran hostage situation and it was our C-130 and crew that were lost during an attempt to rescue the hostages in 1980. I remember even after 32 years quite well of what happened. I had just met weeks before one of the crew members and on several temporary duty assignments, flown with the pilots who were killed.

Those who visit Hermitage should try and pay tribute to these men who served and gave of their lives. A memorial still stands in their honor at the cemetery where the flags continue to fly every day.

Do you talk to yourself when you're alone?

Yes, but I’m basically just thinking out loud.
No, that would be weird.
I don’t know. Next time I’m alone, I’ll ask.
