‘Duck Dynasty’ views are sign of decline

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

In her letter of Jan. 2 criticizing The News for leading the front page on Dec. 23 with a story about a cable television program, Susan Linville could also have noted the irony of an opinion in The News on Dec. 28 headlined “Why does anyone care about ‘Duck Dynasty’ dispute?”

The editorial, from Scripps Howard News Service, raised the question of “how a long-bearded duck-call manufacturer came to be a celebrity of such significant notoriety that his opinions mattered to so many.”

The editorial credited the rise of cable television; it could well have lamented the decline of the daily newspaper as we knew it.

Beginning tonight, the Pittsburgh Penguins will take on the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the NHL playoffs. So, who ya got? And in how many games?

Penguins, in five games or fewer. Too much firepower for the Blue Jackets, especially if Evgeni Malkin is ready to go.
Penguins, in six or seven games. It’s a pretty even matchup on defense, but Pittsburgh will grind it out.
Blue Jackets, in five games or fewer. Sergei Bobrovsky in goal for the Blue Jackets spells trouble for the Pens.
Blue Jackets, in six or seven games. Bobrovsky gives Columbus the edge, but it won’t be easy.
