NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
We Americans are proud of the fact that we have had a democracy for several hundred years and yet, we have never had, as a nation, a true moral code.
You say that I am wrong?
Consider. From our earliest years, the long existence of slavery, the existence of the Ku Klux Klan, elements of disrespect or hatred by individuals and social groups toward American Indians, African Americans, Latinos, Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Muslims, Asians, to name a few.
Were such acts part of a moral code?
Our corporations and our government have been guilty of the same type of action. For example, Boston College is trying to stop its male students from making condoms available to fellow students on campus. The ACLU threatens to sue the college to prevent such action.
In Pennsylvania, a doctor who aids a woman at an abortion, kills the unborn infant in the womb in the act of performing the abortion, is not charged with the commission of any crime.
But if that same doctor murders that pregnant woman and thereby causes the death of the unborn infant, he could be charged with the crime of murder of the first degree for both woman and infant.
If we review the crimes committed during the past 50 years, we find that the most common events relate to the use of guns, drugs, sexual offenses, motor vehicle offenses, all of which violate the moral law.
“Moral law” is defined by Webster as “a conduct standard among good men and independent of legal or religious prohibitions etc.” and so your religious faith is unimportant to the existence of a moral code. It’s simply this: Upon being presented with any actual situation, analyze the situation and determine right from wrong.
