Battle of the Bulge was big event in history, life

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

The Battle of the Bulge. This year will be 69 years since the Bulge, then and now still the largest land battle ever fought.

Then, in 1944, there were 16 million men and women in service. Now, I think less than one million are left.

Gen. George S. Patton asked the troops to pray for clear weather and on Christmas day, the skies cleared and the planes were able to fly.

I never smell a wood fire that I don’t think of the Bulge.

Now, after 70 years, marriage, kids, work and retirement, what perhaps can you say that was maybe the high point of your life?

How about, “I was there”?

J.R. Patterson

Summer is a perfect time for a good read. Where's your favorite place to spend off time with your nose in a book?

Relaxing on the couch
On a bench in the park
By the pool
At the closest beach
I don't have time to read
