NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

Once again, New Castle Area Marine Corps League Detachment 788 is asking people to support the Toys for Tots campaign.

The league assists the Marine Corps Reserves, which sponsor the Toys for Tots Foundation nationally, here in Lawrence County.

Each year many needy children in the Lawrence County area receive toys from Toys for Tots through the City Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army, who process and distribute the toys for the Marine Corps League.

Children served by the following local agencies are also receiving toys through our program: Children and Youth Services, ARC, Crisis Shelter, Children’s Advocacy Center, People in Need and the autistic class at Lincoln High School.

In 2012, the United States Marine Corps distributed more than 16 million new toys to more than 8 million less fortunate children across the country. Locally, the New Castle Marine Corps League distributed 8,000 toys to 1,600 of those children in Lawrence County.

We feel that the many volunteers who make Toys for Tots possible year after year embody the true spirit of Christmas. The gift of a new toy, something most children take for granted, means someone cares, that they haven’t been forgotten, that Christmas hasn’t passed them by.

The Marine Corps League will have collection boxes placed in schools and businesses around the county to receive contributions of new, unwrapped toys.

All children deserve a little Christmas. We hope people will help our campaign. Local drop-off locations can be found on our website:

Financial contributions made payable to the Toys for Tots Foundation may be sent to David Thomas, 426 Fairgreen Ave., New Castle, Pa. 16105, or donations can be made online through the local website.
