NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
Unbelievable. Barack Obama, speaking as a candidate in 2008, said: “trillion-dollar deficits” are “irresponsible,” “immoral” and “unpatriotic.”
Then, as president, he lays on the drama over a 2 percent reduction of “automatic budget increases.”
Remember the Obama, Pelosi, Reid and Democrat stimulus spending in 2009? Well, it never ended. With Senate Democrats not opening the process or producing a budget for the last four years, the additional trillion of stimulus spending became the “new spending level,” along with automatic increases.
The Obama administration, wanting even more to spend, dreamed up sequester. Aware of the outrage over the “irresponsible” and “immoral” historic deficit spending of more than $1 trillion per year and knowing the last GOP controlled budget for fiscal year 2007 was $174 billion in deficit spending (which included war spending), Obama wanted to make an alternative of him not getting more to spend as unappetizing to Republicans as possible.
With more than $400 billion identified in wasteful and duplicate services with the budget process closed for years, Republicans went for sequester to stop the crazy spending. But at this writing, Senate Democrats, working on their first budget in more than four years, want an additional trillion to spend and their budget will only reduce the deficit by $300 billion in 10 years.
Washington is drastically divided. On one side, conservatives in the GOP know Social Security, Medicare and possibly the nation will be bankrupt in 10 years. On the other side, Democrats think there exists unlimited wealth out there, that they just need to get their hands on, and don’t care much about amassing $24 trillion or more, of debt. Can’t get more divided than that.
