NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
When my husband and I learned about the Pennsylvania Association of Student Council State Conference from Kristina Riggans, a senior at Union who is state president, we decided to offer our home.
After contacting Natalee Schmolley, the PASC housing coordinator, we were assigned four girls from Selinsgrove. The conference took place Nov. 1-3, involving 750 students with 200 advisers.
The stay began with dinner in our home, which gave us an opportunity to get to know the girls. We were amazed to learn the variety of courses these students were taking in high school. The girls shared how students can submit suggested sessions to be presented during the conference. Two of our students had their submissions chosen for presentation. Another of the students participated in the PASC National Convention.
I was impressed that along with their educational studies, all four were part of sport teams, including lacrosse and cross country. In addition to juggling their sport schedules with academics, they had part-time jobs. That is a real tribute to their parents, as part-time work schedules may conflict with family activities.
Thursday night the students were bused to the fairgrounds and witnessed the most outstanding fireworks show ever. We were told it was the first time Pyrotechnico and Zambelli had worked together and the results were amazing.
It was such fun to see Laurel and Union students directing traffic and chatting with hosts families.
The girls were appreciative of the food provided by Pizza Joe’s and Medure’s.
Union and Laurel school districts, with help from New Castle, should be commended for their efforts.
Advisers Rose Ann Fulena from Union, Toni Schooley from Laurel and the many others helped to make this event possible.
Just one more reason why New Castle is the Right Place.
