NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
As a retired educator and board member of the New Castle school district, I feel my 30-plus years in teaching and six years on the school board present me with abundant experience and knowledge to warrant an opinion.
The Lockley project was originally a cost-saving venture, eliminating existing buildings worn from years of use. A state of the art for our students and all employees. I supported this project wholeheartedly.
Yes, I changed my vote. The project came in at $1 million dollars over budget. My support could no longer be justified.
Did we have the tax base to support this? The thought of the burden on taxpayers weighed heavily on me.
Acting superintendent Stan Magusiak has presented for the first time actual class sizes. Projection appears to be 28 students per grade level in each room.
My experience tells me those numbers are too high.
This is not a formula for success. I am truly disappointed.
