Editor, The News:
I read with interest the letter to the editor in the July 24 New Castle News.
The same thing happened to me on July 20.
On July 18, it was necessary to take my mother to Jameson’s emergency department. After approximately two and a half hours, we left with two prescriptions.
After a day on the medication, I became concerned that she was having an allergic reaction to one of the prescribed medications.
We followed up on July 20 with her medical doctor, who immediately took her off one of the medications and prescribed a different antibiotic.
He also recommended her seeing a dermatologist.
In my inane thinking, I assumed a doctor’s office calling another doctor’s office would speed up the appointment process.
However, we were advised that because she hadn’t been seen by the doctor in the past four years, she was considered a “new patient” and they were not accepting any new patients.
In addition, they were not accepting UPMC for Life insurees. I, too, offered to pay for the service, but to no avail.
Is there something wrong with this picture? Has anyone else experienced a similar situation?
Even worse, whatever happened to the Hippocratic Oath, to the caring and compassion for patients?
On the plus side, my mother is doing much better.
