LETTER: City must challenge lawsuit
New Castle News
Editor, The News:
There were two disturbing articles recently in The News.
One was the lawsuit filed by Officer Allison Farris against the city and the other, the alleged case against Nancy Miles, concerning the missing tax dollars.
I am not as concerned about the alleged case against Miles, as I know our beleaguered police department is aggressively investigating the case, even though it met with some resistance initially.
It is the Farris lawsuit that concerns me. When I sat on council, our solicitor fought these cases and usually won, thus saving tax dollars. The tendency now is just to settle these types of cases at a cost to the taxpayer and the people being accused. It puts a blotch on their reputations.
Farris is the same individual who filed a sexual discrimination suit when she worked at the sheriff’s office. She lost. She is the same person who was voted out of the FOP. She no longer is entitled to union benefits.
Our police department is a hard-working department. It didn’t get a sweetheart contract prior to Act 47 as the other departments. Police deserve much better from this administration. When I needed them, they were here in minutes.
Our city is ravaged with crime. Officers put their lives on the line every day. The mayor needs to understand he was not elected just to help those he thinks helped to get him elected. He is responsible to the taxpayer. He also must support his police department and chief.
Not to fight this case would not only be a travesty to the taxpayer, but a travesty to our police department. Not to fight this case would be a disservice to those she is accusing.
I would humbly suggest the mayor and the city solicitor do their jobs.
