The Union Township supervisors have approved a new zoning permit fee for those living in the New Castle Airport area.

The new fees include $10 for residential properties and $50 for commercial for review of sites to make sure they comply with airport regulations.

The New Castle Airport Authority owns the old Marine barracks. It’s the biggest eyesore in Union Township, if not the entire county, yet the authority is worried about neighboring properties.

Previous editions of The News have reported these safety and code violations. However, the rich folks at the airport are too cheap to remove the building, and Union Township lets them get away with it.

Talk about audacity. The airport violates Union Township regulations but wants the residents of Union to pay extra to comply with theirs. The airport should clean its own mess before worrying about anyone else.

Shouldn’t the supervisors make the airport comply before they burden homeowners and businesses with more fees?

A few months ago, The News had a story about an elderly gentleman who was arrested and jailed for not maintaining his home in Union Township. The poor guy should have said he’s hoping to get a grant. It’s worked for the airport for years.

Isn’t it about time the airport users pay their own bills? I bet other townships wouldn’t tolerate this nonsense.
