Editor, The News:
Tomorrow, we will celebrate the 233rd anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Not only does the declaration declare independence from British rule, it also declares our nation’s dependence on Almighty God.
The declaration closes with these words: “With a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.”
Our founding fathers and most of our presidents have affirmed faith in God as our sovereign ruler, on whom we depend for “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Thomas Jefferson wrote, “Can liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that their liberties are the gift of God?”
I consider the ACLU to be America’s public enemy number one. This un-American organization is determined to remove from our nation’s documents, schools and public assemblies any mention of God, prayer or reverent faith.
In doing so, it is undermining the foundation on which this nation was built, as well as courting divine judgment. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12). By inference, God’s blessing is withheld from the nation whose god is not the Lord.
Although we are a diverse people, the overwhelming majority of us are monotheists — Christians, Muslims and Jews — who believe in one God. We are governed by a democracy in which the majority is supposed to rule.
But in this topsy-turvy generation, the will of the majority must yield to the tyranny of the few.
If just one atheist objects to a prayer or even the mention of God in a high school graduation speech, that person’s will, not that of the majority, must prevail.
