Prejudice argument falls flat
New Castle News
Editor, The News:
I happen to be one Lawrence County resident who takes offense to the many Barack Obama supporters who continually accuse the rest of us of perpetual “prejudice and hatred.”
To listen to these accusations, one would think all other Lawrence County citizens are incapable of making any intelligent decisions.
Perhaps Obama supporters have conveniently forgotten about the prejudice our Italian, Jewish, Polish, Irish Catholic, female, etc., ancestors had to endure in years past. The main difference is that they did not “boo hoo” about it daily. They did not have civil rights and affirmative action groups to represent them.
However, they held their heads high and led very respectable and productive lives. They instilled strong value systems in their children and grandchildren, many of whom are now being accused of spreading “hateful and harmful prejudice.”
Also, many of these Lawrence Countians have strong spiritual ties to their places of worship, support families and absolutely do accept the many diverse cultures that make our country what it is today. And the last I heard, we still had the freedom to listen to the candidates’ views on national security, economics, health care and social issues, and then to choose the candidate that best represents the values congruent with our own.
Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is that their candidate is probably losing support plain and simply because the voters have begun to realize he is politically inexperienced and lacks the expertise to lead our country as president, based on the issues.
To blame the intelligent decisions the voters have made on prejudice is frankly just a reverse prejudicial cop out.
