High School Sports: Local woman heads state concussion program
A Lawrence County woman has taken the lead in helping Pennsylvania school personnel evaluate and assist students with concussions. Brenda Eagan Brown, a Laurel High School graduate, is the state coordinator for BrainSTEPS, a program that unveiled “Concussion Return to School Protocol” with the state Department of Education.

High School Wrestling: Three from Laurel qualify for WPIAL competition
Three Laurel High wrestlers have qualified for the WPIAL Individual Class AA Championships. Shane King, Harley Peterson and Ryan Glasser each earned a spot with their performances in the WPIAL Section 1-AA tournament at Chartiers-Houston High School.

Laurel OKs teacher resignations
The Laurel School Board has accepted the resignations of two teachers. Susan L. Duckstein, a special education teacher, and Charles P. Cuba, an elementary teacher, will leave at the end of the current school year.

Lawrence County farmers, square dance teams and FFA members who attended the Pennsylvania Farm Show last month returned with honors. The week-long event took place at the state farm show complex in Harrisburg. Dozens of Lawrence County residents traveled to Harrisburg to compete or cheer on participants.

Injuries played a factor last night for the Laurel High wrestling team. The Spartans, who have seven competitors out because of injury, lost five matches by forfeit in a 51-11 nonsection home setback to Central Valley.

Tax citation withdrawn
A wage tax citation against a New Castle man has been withdrawn. The citation against Thomas L. Thomas Jr. was filed Jan. 21 by the tax collector for the Laurel School District in the office of District Judge David Rishel.

High School Wrestling: Four place for Laurel
Ryan Glasser, Harley Peterson, Shane King and Dalton Rosta all finished in the top four for the Spartans at the Slippery Rock Tournament, which was held Friday and Saturday.

In The Schools: Laurel OKs teacher contract
The Laurel School Board has approved a four-year contract with its teachers. The contract calls for pay increases of $2,200 in the first year, $2,100 in the second and third years, and $2,200 in the fourth year.

Laurel OKs vehicle purchases
The Laurel School Board has approved the purchase of a new bus and van. The board awarded a contract of $81,125 to Myers Equipment Co. of Canfield, Ohio, for a 72-passenger bus. The firm submitted the low bid.

High School Football: Pat Cuba named coach at Laurel
The Laurel High football team has filled its coaching void. Pat Cuba was named head football coach of the Spartans by the Laurel School Board last night. He was hired by an 8-0 vote to replace longtime coach Jerry Holzhauser, who retired in November.
