NEW CASTLE — The Green Giants team from Laurel High School had the top score at this year’s Lawrence County Envirothon.

The students were among six teams from Wilmington and Laurel high schools who competed in the May 7 event at Cascade Park. The science competition, sponsored by the Lawrence County Conservation District, tests students’ knowledge of environmental resources and their relation to each other and human activities.

The conservation district has conducted a local Envirothon since 1997, where students in grades nine through 12 compete in the areas of forestry, aquatics, wildlife, soils and this year’s current issue of grazing lands and pasture management.

The winning team is representing Lawrence County at the Pennsylvania State Envirothon, which is going on this week at Juniata College in Huntington, Pa.

Members of the Green Giants are Taylor Lubinski, Marissa Lubinski, Alyssa Morelli and Devin Miller.

Another Laurel team, The Intimidators II, placed second in the local event. Team members are Erin Hassell, Marlon Tanner, Brett Kaufman, Jesse Litzenburg, Carley Pickel and Miranda Delozier.

A Wilmington team, The Mushrooms, placed third. Its members are Cody Cooper, Brandon Ryder and Isabella Sturm.

The top three teams received monetary awards and trophies.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission awarded the top-scoring teams in aquatics with subscriptions to PA Angler magazine. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service presented a plaque to the highest scoring team in soils and land use, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission awarded patches to the top team in wildlife. All participants received T-shirts.

The Envirothon, which started in Pennsylvania in 1983, is the largest environmental high school environmental competition in the nation and is currently established in 45 states, nine Canadian provinces and one Canadian territory.

The winners of each state and province will compete in the North American Envirothon. This year it will be Aug. 4 to 9 at Montana State University in Bozeman.

Local high school teachers who want more information about the Envirothon may contact Jo Ann McCready, Lawrence Conservation District director, at (724) 652-4512 or
