NEW CASTLE — Three Laurel High wrestlers have qualified for the WPIAL Individual Class AA Championships.

Shane King, Harley Peterson and Ryan Glasser each earned a spot with their performances in the WPIAL Section 1-AA tournament at Chartiers-Houston High School.

The top five wrestlers from sectionals move on in each weight class to the championship matchup, which takes place at 5:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Chartiers Valley High School.

In the 145-pound weight class, Shane King finished second overall with a 3-1 record. In the championship match, he lost by an injury default to Tanner Sutton (Chartiers-Houston) at 1:05.

“We’re hoping he’s okay for this weekend,” Spartans coach Kevin Carmichael said.

Peterson finished in third place in the 138-pound weight class to move on.

“He did a good job and battled through,” Carmichael said. “He had a couple tough matches. He’s very strong for that weight class. He’s been wrestling from 145 or 152 pounds most of the year. That helped him. I think he has a good job at advancing this coming weekend as well.”

Glasser was the last Laurel wrestler to advance from the 106-pound weight class, recording a fifth-place finish by going 2-3 overall.

“I’m very proud of the way he wrestled at sections,” Carmichael said. “It’s a tough road ahead. He’ll have to battle his way through.”
