Laurel OKs bus purchase

NEW CASTLE — The Laurel School Board has approved the purchase of a 72-passenger bus.

Wolfington Body Co. of Exton, Pa., was awarded the contract for $79,935, which was the lowest of three bids received.

At its meeting the board also:

•Approved the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center budget of $7,084,421 for the 2012-13 school year. The shares to be paid by each of the county’s eight school districts toward the budget have yet to be finalized.

•Hired Tina Lechner at the junior/senior high school cafeteria for $7.25 per hour.

•Approved a leave of absence for Elizabeth Ernst, high school Spanish teacher, from May 7 until the beginning of the 2012-13 school year in August.

Evans, of New Castle High School, and Hovis, of Laurel High School, were chosen based on their winning essays about whether the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is Constitutional.

    Mike Tinstman has coached his last game as boys basketball coach at Laurel High School. The veteran coach and school board president Tim Redfoot both confirmed that the district has opened the job held by Tinstman for the last nine years.

    Charles Gryn believes a high school production should be just that — a performance produced primarily by students. When Laurel High’s production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat” opens tomorrow, more than 40 kids will take to the stage, but “At least 275 students will have touched this show in one capacity or another,” said Gryn, who is the director.

Tiffnie, a sixth-grader at Laurel Elementary, marched in Saturday’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Pittsburgh, where she got to meet — and have her photo taken with — Vice President Joe Biden.

    The Laurel School Board has approved the refinancing of a 2007 bond issue. The refinancing, which is not to exceed $11 million, is projected to save the district $622,000 because of current low interest rates.

  • Laurel sets kindergarten sign-up

    Laurel Elementary School will hold kindergarten registration April 2 and 3. Children entering kindergarten must be age 5 on or before Sept. 1. Also, children not presently enrolled in kindergarten at Laurel who plan to enter first grade and who will be 6 years old before Sept. 1 also will be registered.
