NEW CASTLE — Choices.

We make them every day.

In every way.

Hour by hour.

Moment by moment.

You decide.

I decide.

For better or for worse.

And our lives depend on it.

We’ve got no excuses.

There’s no one to blame.

It’s on us.

Those donuts you ate for breakfast? You’re gonna pay for them, even if they were left in your office as a gift.

The late-night drinking binge? Same thing.

The run at the park? You’re gonna benefit from that.

Just as you will from pushing aside the cheeseburger in favor of the spinach and sweet potato salad.

You decide.

I decide.

We can play now and pay later or pay now and play later.

Either way, we have to pay.

I hate how the word “discipline” has been given a negative tag. It does not mean “punishment.”

Discipline is a good thing. Discipline is a healthy thing. In fact, I can sum up the definition of discipline with two very positive words:

•Vision — It’s about knowing where you want to go and plotting a strategy to get there.

•Consistency — It’s about doing the things you need to do to carry out your vision — and doing them every day, everywhere, every time.

In other words, determine who you want to be or where you want to go. Then do what’s necessary to get there.

That’s it.

Insanely simple.

But incredibly difficult.

You decide.

I struggle with them daily.

What to eat. What to read. What “good” thing do I turn down in order to be available for the “best” thing?

It’s a battle.

Man, it’s a battle.

And if you’re struggling too, please know we’re in this together.

So if I can offer any wisdom in the area of discipline, I’ve found that life works best when I can deliver definitive answers to two questions:

•What do I want most?

•Am I willing to sacrifice what I want now for what I want most?

What’s ironic, though, is I often find the first question to be the most difficult. What do I REALLY want most?

We must answer that question ourselves or we’ll find a long line of people — and thousands of TV commercials — ready to answer it for us.

You can have one marshmallow now or, if you can wait 15 minutes, you’ll get two.

That was the basis for the “Marshmallow Test” at Stanford University, in which a group of nursery school pupils were taught a lesson in self-discipline.

The researchers, led by psychologist Walter Mischel, found only about 30 percent of more than 600 children tested could hold out.

Years later, author Jonah Lehrer reported that those children who waited 15 minutes averaged 210 points higher — more than 10 percent — on college entrance exams than did those who could wait only 30 seconds.

In essence, Lehrer discovered that delayed gratification is the only true gratification.

And those who learn to delay most often delight later on.

So, whether you are an athlete, an entrepreneur or a stay-at-home mom, you will be faced with dozens of temptations today.

Will you give in and give up what you want most for what you want now?

Or will discipline determine your destiny?

Only you can decide.

Only I can decide.

And we both must take great care.
