NEW CASTLE —
This week I would like to deviate from my usual ramblings and just simply congratulate the New Castle basketball team and coaches on their state title.
I was able to watch the game from home, but I know of many, many people who traveled to Hershey to watch in person. The support of these fans reflects the kind of town I was born and raised in.
New Castle’s citizens are not perfect, not always in the right and sometimes represent this town poorly, but I truly do feel as though it IS a good place to live and raise a family. Not because of crime, nepotism or scandal (all of which occur in every city, incidentally), but rather because of the families, the supporters and the community as a whole.
I have lived in other cities, in other parts of the country, and have found that the sense of community, rallying around people who need help and celebrating the good fortune of others is NOT prominent everywhere. It is a special quality that this city possesses and the support for this local team is just one glimpse into that side of our town.
Congratulations to both the team and the fans. Both have shown New Castle to be a town that supports its residents.
And today, I am very proud of that.
