Kali Davies-Anderson: If you have the time, here’s a little birthday rhyme

NEW CASTLE — Today, as I celebrate my 29th birthday (I know what you’re thinking — “she wrote about this last week, enough already with the birthday stuff!”), I am reminded of the blessings that I have in my life and the acceptance that I have learned to have for myself.

More often than not, the best person one can be is oneself.

The people trying to become or pretend to be something that they inherently are not, are the same people who have difficulty achieving the happiness that we all desire.

This notion of staying true to yourself, reminds me of a poem by the very linguistically gifted Dr. Suess. It’s a poem, also very appropriate for today — for me, anyway.

And so it goes ...

A Poem By Dr Seuss

"If we didn’t have  birthdays, you wouldn’t be  you.

If you’d never been born, well then what would you do?

If you’d never been  born, well then what would you be?

You might be a fish! Or a toad in a tree!

You might be a doorknob! Or three baked potatoes!

You might be a bag full of hard green tomatoes."

"Or worse than all that …Why, you might be a WASN’T!

A Wasn’t has no fun at all. No, he doesn’t.

A Wasn’t just isn’t. He just isn’t present.

But you …You ARE YOU! And, now isn’t that pleasant!"

"Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive...who is you-er than you!

Shout loud, “I am lucky to be what I am!

Thank goodness I’m not just a clam or a ham

Or a dusty old jar of sour gooseberry jam! I am

what I am! That’s a great thing to be!

If I say so myself, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

Would you want to know what your pet is thinking about you?

Yes! I'd love to know what my pet is thinking.
Nah, it's probably not that interesting.
I don't know. I'm afraid of what I might find out.
