Kali Davies-Anderson: Ten things I’ve learned from my father

NEW CASTLE — By the time you read this, Father’s Day 2013 will have come and gone.

However, I would still like to take the time to wish all of you dads out there a happy Father’s Day, with special wishes going out to my own father, the infamous Bob “Booby” Davies and my husband and father to my children, the not quite as infamous Erik “Crow” Anderson.

(Yes those are the nicknames of the two most important men in my life and yes, I know it doesn’t look very promising.)

In observance of this special day I would like to recognize the very important lessons that my own father has taught me. Here they are, in no particular order:

1) Always look down when you’re on foot, even if it means a near miss with a mini-van. You have no chance at finding money if you don’t.

2) Eliminate the word “embarrassed” from your vocabulary. If you are always true to yourself, there is no reason to be embarrassed — even if your daughter posts a photo of you wearing a sparkly headband and part of a hair extension on Facebook.

3) It is OK to yell across the store that you would like “$1.55 on pump 4” when at the gas station, because again, no reason to be embarrassed if you are being true to who you are.

4) No matter how cool you THINK you are as a dad, to your daughter, that level of coolness multiplies infinitely when you allow her to paint your nails and apply makeup to your face.

5) There is no ailment that a diet Coke, some popcorn and a movie won’t cure.

6) Being wrapped up in a blanket and swung around the living room is the most fun a 4-year-old can ever aspire to have. EVER.

7) Secret breakfasts at Perkins at 5 a.m. on Sunday mornings without the rest of the family taste better than normal ones.

8) If you turn the radio up loud enough, you will not be burdened by the fact your muffler has just catapulted from your car and come to rest at a school bus stop. (Your daughter waiting for the bus at said bus stop will, however, very much notice.)

9) Ranch dressing deserves its own spot on the food pyramid.

10) And lastly, if everywhere you go people are seeking you out to say hello, everyone from the woman doing hair at the mall to the greeter at the grocery store and the receptionist at the eye doctor’s, you are doing something right in your life.

Even if they are calling you “Booby.”

Beginning tonight, the Pittsburgh Penguins will take on the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the NHL playoffs. So, who ya got? And in how many games?

Penguins, in five games or fewer. Too much firepower for the Blue Jackets, especially if Evgeni Malkin is ready to go.
Penguins, in six or seven games. It’s a pretty even matchup on defense, but Pittsburgh will grind it out.
Blue Jackets, in five games or fewer. Sergei Bobrovsky in goal for the Blue Jackets spells trouble for the Pens.
Blue Jackets, in six or seven games. Bobrovsky gives Columbus the edge, but it won’t be easy.
