Hearing continued in child assault case

NEW CASTLE — A hearing for a man accused of severely injuring his infant son has been continued for the second time.

No new hearing date has been set for Craig Vincent Underwood, 27, of 81 Shenango Road. He is charged with aggravated and simple assault and endangering the welfare of children.

Preliminary hearings had been scheduled for Nov. 15 and rescheduled for Tuesday. He remains in the Lawrence County jail on $250,000 bond.

Neshannock Township police arrested Underwood Nov. 9 after the 3-month-old child was admitted to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh with a fractured skull, several broken ribs, a broken right leg, black eyes, bruises and scratches.

According to police, Underwood, a British subject from near London, and the child’s mother met online. He came to the United States and decided to stay. The two moved in together and had the child.

Police documents state that after the child’s birth, the mother returned to work and Underwood agreed to stay home to care for the baby. Police added Underwood’s visa expired in October, and he is therefore in the country illegally.
