Man sentenced on sexual assault of child

NEW CASTLE — A New Galilee man has been sentenced to a state penitentiary for sexually assaulting a child.

Shawn Belmont Cox, 43, who pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated indecent assault of a child, was sentenced to serve two and a half to six years in a state correctional institution on each of those charges.

The sentences are to run concurrently with credit for 10 days served.

Cox also pleaded guilty to indecent assault of a person less than 13 years of age. On this charge, Lawrence County President Judge Dominick Motto sentenced him to five years probation. This is to be served after the jail time is completed.

He also is ordered to have no contact with the victim and to undergo sex offender treatment after his release.

Cox originally had faced 14 charges. They were two counts each of rape of a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child, unlawful contact with a minor, statutory sexual assault, indecent assault of a person less than age 13, indecent exposure and corruption of minors.

According to court records, Cox was arrested March 14, 2012, but police said the incidents took place in June 2007, when the victim was 12 years old.

Records state the incidents first came to the attention of police in 2007, but it was not until DNA evidence became available that the police filed a complaint.

Records state the victim recounted sexual contact with Cox, including intercourse.
