Hearing changed for son accused of shooting May’s Donuts owner

NEW CASTLE — A preliminary hearing for the man accused of killing his father has been changed.

Michael Burrelli, 28, of 5 Fruitland Drive is now scheduled for a preliminary hearing Sept. 5.

Burrelli is charged with criminal homicide in the shooting death of his father, Charles Burrelli, 58, of the same address.

Authorities said the son shot his father seven times Thursday at the May’s Donuts production site in Union Township. The elder Burrelli was the owner of the operation the two men ran.

According to police, the shooting occurred after a dispute involving the use of a cell phone escalated into violence.

Michael Burrelli, who is being held in the Lawrence County jail without bond, also is accused of abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

Police said he was attempting to move his father’s body and dispose of it at Moraine State Park when officers intervened.
