Hearing continued for bank robbery suspect

NEW CASTLE — The preliminary hearing for the man charged with robbing a Hickory Township bank has been continued.

Norman Clifford Lowe, 57, of Eastbrook Apartments, remains in the Lawrence County jail, charged with two counts of robbery and one count each of facsimile weapons of mass destruction, terroristic threats, theft, receiving stolen property and disorderly conduct. His bond is continued at $100,000.

Lowe’s hearing, scheduled for Monday, has been rescheduled to Oct. 22 at the request of the defendant. He is represented by the office of the public defender.

According to police, Lowe entered First National Bank’s branch on Harlansburg Road about 11:30 a.m. Aug. 12, placed a rectangular device on the counter and told the teller it was an explosive. He allegedly ordered her to give him money or he would detonate the bomb.

Police said the man ran after receiving the money, leaving the device behind.

Bank employees were told to leave the building, and the bank was closed for the rest of the day.

The Allegheny County Bomb Squad used a robot to remove the item, which was dismantled and determined not to be explosive.
