Child rapist sentenced to prison

NEW CASTLE — An Edinburg man convicted of raping a child has been sentenced to 14 to 28 years in a state penitentiary.

George Franklin Rathy Jr., 34, of 159 Jane Lane, was sentenced Thursday by Lawrence County President Judge Dominick Motto. He was given credit for 915 days served.

Following his release from jail, Rathy will be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law for the rest of his life.

Following a three-day, non-jury trial before Motto in November 2012, Rathy was found guilty of rape of a child less than 13 years of age, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, attempted rape, attempted involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and indecent assault of a person less than 13 years of age.

An additional charge of statutory sexual assault had been dismissed.

At his trial, Rathy testified on his behalf. Also testifying were Harry S. Gustafson Jr., a Pennsylvania state trooper who had filed the charges, and the victim.

According to reports filed by state police, Rathy was accused of sodomizing an 8-year-old in North Beaver Township during Christmas break in December 2008, and warning the child not to tell anyone. Police said Rathy had been in a relationship with the child’s mother at the time.
