City man held for trial in death of son

NEW CASTLE — A man charged in the death of his 6-week-old son is heading to court.

Following a preliminary hearing Thursday for Terrance R. Murphy, 21, of 124 Park Ave., District Judge Melissa Amodie ordered him held for court.

Murphy is charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault and simple assault in the death of his son.

He remains in the Lawrence County jail where he is being held without bond.

According to court documents, the baby, Terrance Murphy Jr., died Nov. 30 of blunt force trauma to the head that resulted in a fractured skull.

Unrelated charges of simple assault, harassment, defiant trespass, criminal homicide and flight to avoid apprehension were withdrawn.

Those charges, filed by New Castle police, stem from an incident Nov. 5.

A letter writer to The News has suggested there’s plenty to be negative about when it comes to the city of New Castle. In general, are you negative or hopeful about our city?

I’m negative. Nepotism, corruption, and incompetence have ruled for years. Nothing has changed.
I’m hopeful. I view the county as a whole, so there’s a lot to be positive about.
Mixed. I think we’re like any other area. You have to take the bad with the good.
