NEW CASTLE —
The man accused of running over two boys Sunday, killing one of them, has been released on bond.
Virgil Coonfare, 66, of 221 W. Moody Ave., has been released from the Lawrence County jail on $25,000 bond. District Justice Jerry Cartwright set the bond.
Coonfare is charged with homicide by vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance, aggravated assault by vehicle and driving while under the influence of a controlled substance.
Police said he is responsible for the death of Octavius Stone, 7, of Winslow Avenue.
According to police, Octavius and 9-year-old Ozzy Velez were playing in front of Ozzy’s grandmother’s house on Winslow Avenue when a truck driven by Coonfare turned from Stanton Avenue onto Winslow, climbed an embankment and struck both children.
Ozzy was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh and has since been released.
A preliminary hearing, set for Wednesday will be rescheduled, according to David Acker, Coonfare’s attorney.
“We don’t have the lab test results yet,” Acker said. “We can’t have a hearing until we have all of the relevant facts.”
