NEW CASTLE —
A Neshannock Township man will spend up to 10 years in a state penitentiary for a rash of burglaries.
Samuel Leroy Bartberger Jr., 32, of 2738 Plank Road was sentenced by Lawrence County Judge J. Craig Cox to serve up to 10 years in a state correctional institution for nine separate offenses, including burglaries, attempted burglaries and a trespass case. The judge ordered that all sentences are to be served concurrently.
New Castle police allege that Bartberger broke into nine houses in the city between March 28 and April 11, taking cash, jewelry, a camera, two laptop computers, a Nintendo game system and game and clothing, including a costume from a medieval festival.
Bartberger faced more than 20 counts including burglary, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, theft by deception and attempted burglary.
Sentences imposed include fines and court costs for each guilty plea, as follows:
•$1,000 restitution to one victim and $866 restitution to Metlife.
•Costs of prosecution, $800 restitution to the victim and $1,234.30 restitution to Allstate Insurance.
•Costs of prosecution for one case with no restitution to a victim.
•Costs of prosecution, $1,125 restitution to one victim and $125 restitution to New Castle Gold.
•Costs of prosecution, $974 restitution to one victim and $125 restitution to New Castle Gold.
•Costs of prosecution for an attempted burglary case.
•Four years probation and costs or prosecution in one case.
•Costs of prosecution for a criminal trespass case.

An Ellwood City club has been cited for gambling activities. The Pennsylvania Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement has cited the Ellwood City Saxon Club at 901 Millview St.

Suspect in officer’s death jailed in county
Kylee Gwen Barletto was composed walking into court Monday until a television reporter pelted her with questions. Escorted by two state troopers, she was asked, “What do you have to say to the police officer’s family?” “I’m sorry,” she uttered as she was ushered into the court lobby. Then she burst into tears.

Prosecutors granted stay in Jordan Brown decision
A hearing on the status of a boy accused in a 2009 fatal shooting has been canceled. The hearing on 15-year-old Jordan Brown’s detention had been planned for Lawrence County Court today, but was canceled after prosecutors requested, and received, a stay in the proceedings.

Suspect in officer’s death is arraigned
Kylee Barletto was arraigned this morning by District Judge Jerry Cartwright. She is being lodged in the Lawrence County jail on $250,000 bond. Barletto, 25, is charged with homicide by vehicle and 14 other counts in the May 2 death of Shenango Township police officer William J. McCarthy IV.
