FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE: Heidi, especially the time NBC pre-empted the Oakland Raiders-New York Jets football game in the final minute to begin the Shirley Temple classic movie. The Jets led 32-29 with 65 seconds remaining when television coverage stopped. But the Raiders scored twice in nine seconds to win 43-32, and nobody saw it. Heidi was great though!

ALL-TIME FAVORITE CHRISTMAS GIFT: In 1959, a large cardboard rocket ship in which my brothers and I made many trips to the moon.

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS FOOD OR DRINK: Thick eggnog with cinnamon sprinkled on top.

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE: “A Christmas Memory” — the 1966 version starring Geraldine Page. It’s based on a Truman Capote short story and is bittersweet but wonderful.

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS CAROL: It’s not a Christmas carol, but I have to say Tchaikovsky’s score for “The Nutcracker” ballet.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE CHRISTMAS GIFT: The bed-and-breakfast overnights my sister and brother have been giving us the past few years.

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS CAROL: Tie between “O, Holy Night” — sung by either Harry Connick Jr. or CeCe Winans — and “Dzisiaj w Betlejem” (“Today in Bethlehem”), a Polish carol.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE CHRISTMAS GIFT: My first pair of Nikes. Believe it or not, Michael Jordan wasn’t the first NBA player to wear them. As a kid, I saw Eric Money of the Detroit Pistons sporting a pair and I had to have them. I can still smell the leather.

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS FOOD OR DRINK: Wasilewski’s kielbasa, lathered with beets and horseradish, and a side dish of my mother’s potato salad. If I could go back in time, I’d wash it all down with a cool bottle of Paul’s black cherry pop. (Anyone remember that?) Our family chilled those small glass bottles in a wooden case on our back porch.

They came with a plug-in “Thingmaker” that got hot and had liquid plastic called “Plastigoop” and you could “cook” and make flowers, faces, feet, hands and heads for creatures. I used to put them on pencils and decorate with sequins and feathers. I loved the glow-in-the-dark Plastigoop.
