Mohawk Schools: One of county’s most ambitious musical directors calling it a career.
On Sunday, the final curtain will descend on Mohawk High School’s performance of “Phantom of the Opera.” And with it will end the the stage career of one of Lawrence County’s premier high school drama directors.

Paul Angelucci had a dilemma. “I had so many talented kids who could play the leads in our musical this year, it was a bit of challenge to fit everyone in to the right role,” Angelucci said. “But I think we got it right.”

No alterations required. When Jake Blank and Mikaylah Jewell hit the high notes of “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” it’s a perfect fit. Blank’s rich, deep tones and Jewell’s pure soprano are an ideal match and make for goosebump-inducing moments.

When it came time for Brenda Hickman to select Wilmington High’s spring musical, her choice was an easy one. “When I did musical theater in college, I was cast in the ‘Pajama Game’ and just loved it everything about it — the story, the soundtrack, the costumes, all of it,” she said. “I felt pretty certain that the kids would enjoy it as much as I did.”

Gone are witches, a cowardly lion and munchkins from last year’s “Wizard of Oz.” They have been replaced by wolves, gargoyles and an adorable talking teacup for the presentation of “Disney’s Beauty and The Beast.”
