Gary Church: Hope I’m not in a stew over this chili thing

NEW CASTLE — Sometimes, I think my wife tries to con me, especially when it comes to supper.

When I'm asked what I want for supper, I always say fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy.

She then proceeds to tell me what I'm actually getting.

Last week, she made a delicious pan of chicken pastina soup.

That was on Tuesday, and I had a bowl with my supper.

I also had a bowl of it for lunch on Wednesday, and it was still delicious.

Wednesday afternoon, I got the big question, "What do you want for supper?"

I replied with my standard answer.

She then said, "How about chili?"

Assuming I would also have a bowl of chicken pastina soup I said, "I don't think I want two soups for supper."

That's when the con started.

She said chili wasn't a soup.

I answered, "When you go into a restaurant and ask what kind of soup they have, they usually reply, broccoli, chicken noodle, and chili."

"Chili is a soup!"

She said, "Technically, no, it isn't."

We ended up eating hamburgers with a bowl of chicken pastina.

By doing some research, I found something out, that you must keep to yourself.

Soup is a liquid food of many kinds, usually made by boiling meat and veggies in water.

Stew is a combination of solid food ingredients that have been cooked in water, typically by simmering, and are served without being drained.

Soups are boiled, stews are simmered.

There is a small chance that chili is a stew and not a soup.

Please keep this under your hat.

It would throw off all the restaurants menus ever written, and may make my wife correct for the first time in her life.

Do you talk to yourself when you're alone?

Yes, but I’m basically just thinking out loud.
No, that would be weird.
I don’t know. Next time I’m alone, I’ll ask.
