NEW CASTLE — The Mohawk High boys soccer team continues to look for positives in the midst of a tough season.

The Warriors managed just five shots on goal in a 2-0 nonsection road loss to Riverside.

“We had a couple of scoring chances, but we just didn’t capitalize,” first-year Warriors coach Greg Aydt said. “Riverside was able to capitalize on their chances, otherwise it was a pretty even matchup.

“The guys have improved,” Aydt said. “They never stop working. And our defense has really improved, working hard and moving together as a team.”

Austin Grist made nine saves for Mohawk (1-11-1). The Warriors have dropped five straight games and scored just goals on the year.

The Panthers (9-4-1), who compete in Class A compared to Class AA for Mohawk, led 2-0 at the half.

Lady Spartans fall

Class A Laurel lost its second straight match, dropping a 25-15, 25-23, 25-13 nonsection home match to Class AA Blackhawk.

Allie Collier notched five kills for the Lady Spartans (9-4) and Leah Telesz added five points.

“I think they came in thinking they were going to lose,” Laurel coach Nikki Downing said. “That’s why we only scored 15 points in the first game. In the second game, we didn’t have many errors and it was nice to see us not fall into the same rut that Blackhawk did.

“We used that opportunity to be ahead for most of the game. The girls knew it was a bigger team. They’ve moved on from (Thursday’s) Beaver County Christian loss.

“They’re still anxiously awaiting the Shenango game later in the season and seem motivated.”

Laurel lost the JV match to Blackhawk, 28-26, 26-24.

Stephanie Telesz paced the Lady Spartans with nine points and seven aces, while Makenna Natale contributed five kills and six digs. Callie Ritchie added five kills and three points.

It’s been a unique week on the marriage front. Actress Jodie Foster married her longtime girlfriend, while a lesbian trio that wed last year, who bill themselves as a “throuple,” have announced they are expecting. What’s your take on alternative unions?

I’m against it. I believe in one man, one woman.
I’m OK with it. As long as they’re adults, they can marry whoever they want.
A lesbian “throuple?” Really? SMH.
