NEW CASTLE —
It’s a winning combination: raising a glass and funds at the same time.
That was the opportunity at the third annual Super Brew, which offered participants the chance to sample more than 5o craft beers and to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
The event raised $46,000, which the Super Brew team presented last week to Bruce Bauman, the Cancer Society’s Lawrence County manager.
Team Super Brew is comprised of Preston and Jenny Flannery, Ryan Harcar, Eric Karmecy, Geoff Measel, Dan Nelson, and Mark Walzer. For this year’s event, the group arranged for a fully equipped bar sculpted entirely of ice. The ice sculptor stayed busy as he carved and engraved ice mugs for those in search of the ice-cold beer.
The Super Brew is split into two sessions. Session I guests were delighted by the crisp, clean sounds of The Eintracht Singing Society. Session I also is home to the Home Brewers Circle, a competition amongst individuals sharing their very best home brews.
This year’s winning Home Brewer was No Points Brewing’s Bourbon Barrel Ale.
Session II guests took to the dance floor as dueling pianos and a DJ filled the room with catchy tunes and song requests.
During both sessions, piping hot reubens and bratwursts flowed from the Crane Room Grille’s kitchen for guests to enjoy in addition to the complimentary munchies. Beer maidens Rebecca, Tanya, Jackie, Molly, Leah and Mindy kept themselves busy selling 50/50 raffle tickets. In keeping with the spirit of philanthropy, two of the 50/50 winners donated a portion of their winnings back to the American Cancer Society.
Guests also were able to vote on their favorite beers of the evening by placing donations into the individual beer buckets of their choosing. The winning beers were determined by the buckets with the greatest cash total. The beer bucket cash also goes directly to the American Cancer Society.
The top three beer providers (brewers or distributors) were presented with trophies, as well as the privilege of being served on tap for one year at The Crane Room Grille. Abita Purple Haze took home first place, with Rust Belt Blast Furnace Blonde Ale coming in second place and Magner’s Irish Cider placing third.
Toward the end of the event, lights were dimmed and the room was filled with the soft light of purple glows sticks being held by cancer survivors. Cancer Society representative Ernie Copper read a poignant toast that appropriately tied everything together.
Super Brew events now have raised more than $87,000 for the Cancer Society. The inaugural event raised over $11,000, and last year’s proceeds came to over $30,000.
Team Super Brew says this would not have been possible without the generosity of the local distributors brewers, and corporate sponsors as well as hard-working event volunteers. The later were honored at a cocktail party, at which time the check was present to the Cancer Society.
Anyone still wanting to donate may text “superbrew” to 96362. For every text received, The Crane Room Grille will donate $1 to the Relay for Life.
This year’s local relay is scheduled for May 19 at ShenangoHigh School.
