Photo Gallery, Story: Wintry weather serves as a backdrop for Super Brew

NEW CASTLE — Saturday’s snow created a chilly winter wonderland outside, but inside The New Englander Banquet Center things were heating up.

For the fifth year in a row, Team Super Brew of the New Castle Relay for Life held its Super Brew event, which raises money for the American Cancer Society and Relay.

Attendees were encouraged to offer “cheers to a cure” by enjoying more than 50 craft beers provided from home, local and nationally known brewers.

“This is a huge, huge fundraiser in which all the people involved really do outstanding work,” said Ernie Copper, American Cancer Society Relay for Life income specialist.

Two sessions of Super Brew-ing were held, with attendees purchasing a $37.50 ticket to attend. All proceeds from tickets sales and other event activities go to the cancer society.

Multiple local and national sponsors pledged their support for the afternoon, providing entertainment, VIP rooms and additional Super Brew fun.

Since beginning the event, team Super Brew has raised more than $133,000 for the American Cancer Society. Members hoped to add more than $50,000 to that total Saturday.

“Five years ago, we tried to think of a fun event that could raise a lot of money and be held around this time of the year,” Mark Walzer of Team Super Brew said. “It’s a really fun event that everyone can come and enjoy, and socialize.”

That fun included a best brew competition, with attendees leaving money in the bucket of their favorite brewer. Brewers with the most money in their buckets were awarded first-, second- and third-place trophies.

According to Walzer, the members of Team Super Brew look to include a new surprise each year, and this year’s came from a New Castle-based talent.

Pyrotecnico, a nationally known fireworks company, provided a laser show every 45 minutes, complete with fog and music.

Joining this new element were returning dueling pianists and a full band, which provided an evening of music and entertainment.

Team Super Brew wasn’t the only Relay team involved, as additional teams provided support and sold tickets, which helped them earn a few “relay bucks” of their own.

“It’s a great opportunity for other volunteers, too,” Copper said. “Other volunteers can earn volunteer bucks and make contributions to the event as well.

“Everyone involved feeds into this event to make it a huge success.”
