NEW CASTLE —
Call it the Lawrence County fare.
Food from 18 area restaurants and specialty businesses was on the menu for last night’s ninth annual Taste of the Town at the New Englander Banquet Center.
Each year, chefs and bakers from participating establishments serve up some of their finest dishes as a fundraiser for the United Way of Lawrence County. This year, chairwoman Joanne Preston said, a record 360 people turned out to sample the cuisine, surpassing 2011’s high water mark of 320.
“All the food is donated,” Preston said, “and the same restaurants come back with us every year. We couldn’t do it without them, or without all the people who come out to eat.”
The restaurants also donate most of the door prizes that are awarded throughout the evening, Preston added.
Each restaurant was identified by a sign bearing its name and a United Way logo. Local teens were responsible.
“The culinary students from the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center are to be commended for creating the signs you see here tonight,’ Preston said. “(They) do an excellent job in assisting the restaurants.”
Toyota, meanwhile, also supported the event with a $2,000 donation.
“This is the best,” said Gayle Young, director of the local United Way Office. “This is our only fundraiser (event) of the year, and the local restaurants make it a success.
“It gets bigger every year. Word is getting out.”
Proceeds from Taste of the Town go directly into the United Way’s annual campaign coffers.
Last night’s participating restaurants were Faraone Brothers, Gallo’s Italian Villa, Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, Marlowe’s Coffee Service, Mona’s Chocolates, Medure’s Catering, Springfield Grille, Pizza Joe’s, The Crane Room, The Iron Bridge, El Canelo, Sodexco, Clarence Dale Cakes, Giant Eagle’s Butler Avenue and Wilmington Road stores, Wooden Angel, Tuscany’s and Miss Nikki’s Cookies.
