NEW CASTLE —
Injuries played a factor last night for the Laurel High wrestling team.
The Spartans, who have seven competitors out because of injury, lost five matches by forfeit in a 51-11 nonsection home setback to Central Valley.
It was the final dual meet of the season for Laurel (1-7).
“There’s not much you can do when you have that many injuries,” Spartans coach Kevin Carmichael said.
Harley Peterson and Shane King posted Laurel’s lone victories.
Peterson, competing in the 152-pound weight class, pinned the Warriors’ Nick Knudson in just 44 seconds. Peterson is now 15-7.
King, participating at 160, won his match by a technical fall over Randy Ramsey, 23-8. He improved to 13-6 with the win.
“Shane almost technical falled his kid in the first period,” Carmichael said. “It was incredible to watch. He scored four takedowns in 90 seconds; he was a machine out there.
“Harley and Shane are both my leaders. They’re always there for us. They’re both wrestling very well. It’s nice as a coach to send them out on the mat feeling confident with them. It’s not like any of their losses weren’t competitive. Their losses came to good wrestlers.”
Laurel returns to action at 10 a.m. Feb. 16 in the WPIAL sectionals at Chartiers Valley.
Jason Powell (182) and James Brown (285) are expected to return for the Spartans at the sectional meet.
“It will be nice to get them back,” Carmichael said. “It will be nice to see them get some more matches in.
“Both of them are first-year wrestlers and they have both performed real well for us this year.”
