Photo Gallery, Story: Fourth annual Super Brew raises delives cheers for a cure

NEW CASTLE — The fourth annual Super Brew to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life took place Saturday.

The event took place at The Crane Room Grille within the New Englander Banquet Center. More than  30 locally and nationally known breweries were on hand to provide guests with samples of 50-plus craft beers.

The Pumphouse Brewery, located in Struthers, Ohio, poured glasses of its unique Wonka’s Wonder Triple Chocolate Stout for guest after guest, while New Castle’s Outta Focus Brewing Company shared its Peanut Butter Porter.

Melissa Mathews, a representative for Samuel Adams Boston Lager, gave those in attendance a taste of the company’s nationally recognized beverages.

Each guest to the Super Brew event was given a commemorative beer glass for sampling. They enjoyed live entertainment from local bands and singing groups as they sipped and mingled. Some ventured onto the deck of the New Englander facility ,where pork sliders, kielbasa sandwiches and other foods were available.

Last year’s Super Brew raised $46,000. Organizers this year hoped to raise over $50,000.

Ernie Copper of the American Cancer Society praised Saturday’s fundraiser, recognizing the seven core individuals who work together to plan the event.  Ryan Harcar, Geoff Measel, Preston Flannery, Jenny Flannery, Eric Karmecy, Dan Nelson and Mark Walser, all members of the Super Brew Relay For Life team, begin meeting in early November every year to organize the Super Brew.

Although the fundraiser is put together by one Relay For Life team, other teams are given the opportunity to share in the success of the event. Members of Relay For Life teams that sell tickets to the Super Brew receive a commission for each ticket that they sell, which is credited to their team. Members of Relay For Life teams that help out on the day of the event also receive a portion of the money raised at Super Brew.
