NEW CASTLE —
The fifth annual Cheer for a Cure took place yesterday at Westminster College’s Memorial Fieldhouse.
The breast cancer fundraiser featured cheerleading competition and exhibition from 20 area teams in seven age divisions. Teams and individuals also could participate in five-partner stunt groups, tumble-off and jump-off.
One highlight of the day was a performance by Kelsi Darby during a Pink Ribbon Ceremony honoring breast cancer victims and survivors. Darby, a Mercer County native and a 2012 graduate of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Academy, received national attention earlier this year when she made it through four of five audition rounds of Fox TV’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” She is training in New York and Los Angeles as she pursues a career in dance and the performing arts.
Cheer for a Cure is coordinated by Tiffiny Altman and Shanna McNicholas, with a lot of help from various volunteers.
“We would not be able to hold this event without the continuous support of our volunteers, participants and sponsors,” Altman said. “This event is run solely by the gracious efforts of a committee of volunteers who give their time every month throughout the year in preparation.”
In its first four years, Cheer for a Cure raised more than $50,000 for the American Cancer Society and it’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Campaign. It was begun by Alexandra Iorio to honor her mother Kim, who is now a 12-year breast cancer survivor.
This year, because of increasing numbers, the event moved from the Y-Zone to Westminster College.

The Lady Lancers were gunning for consecutive PIAA crowns in different classifications, which would have been a first across the state. They would have become the first softball team in the WPIAL to win back-to-back state championships as well.
