The Shenango High girls volleyball team kept its focus last night. The Lady Wildcats didn’t look past visiting Avonworth, rolling to a 25-20, 25-8, 28-26 nonsection win. Shenango (14-2 overall) will host section rival Laurel (8-2 section) tomorrow.

High School Golf: Carone, Cioffi competing in PIAA western regional qualifier
Only the best golfers reach the boys PIAA Individual Championship. Lawrence County has two with that chance. Shenango’s Darren Carone and Neshannock’s Matt Cioffi will face off against 40 others in the western regional of the PIAA championship today at Tom’s Run Golf Course in Blairsville.

A roundup of action from the weekend
The Wilmington High boys soccer team came alive in the second half Saturday. The Greyhounds scored three second-half goals to earn a 5-2 District 10, Region 2-AA road victory over Hickory.

Neshannock golfers finish third in the WPIAL
It wasn’t a three-peat for the Neshannock High golf team, but the Lancers were pleased with a third-place trophy nonetheless. Senior Mike Maciarello shot an 8-over-par 80 to lead Neshannock to third place out of six teams in the WPIAL Class AA Boys Golf Championship yesterday at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course.

A roundup of cross country, volleyball and tennis from Oct. 11
Laurel High’s Ethan Wilson and Emily Maxwell led a county contingent at the Midwestern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship. Wilson, a senior, placed third in the boys race yesterday in 17:05 and Maxwell, also a senior, finished second in the girls race in 19:55. The event was held at Brush Creek.

The Mohawk High girls soccer team took a big step toward reaching the WPIAL playoffs last night. Amber Dougherty scored a goal early in the first half and the Lady Warriors’ defense made it stand in a 1-0 WPIAL Section 1-A home win over Neshannock.

High School Golf: Neshannock, Shenango advance to WPIAL championship
The news was good for a pair of Lawrence County golf teams yesterday. Neshannock and Shenango high schools both advanced to the WPIAL Class AA Championship.

The Neshannock High girls volleyball team bolstered its playoff position last night. Annalisa Frengel recorded 22 points and eight aces, guiding the host Lady Lancers to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-17 WPIAL Section 3-A win over Beaver County Christian.

The Mohawk High boys soccer team continues to look for positives in the midst of a tough season. The Warriors managed just five shots on goal in a 2-0 nonsection road loss to Riverside. “We had a couple of scoring chances, but we just didn’t capitalize,” first-year Warriors coach Greg Aydt said.
