NEW CASTLE —
The Neshannock High boys golf team is going back to the WPIAL playoffs.
Matt Cioffi fired a 36, lifting the Lancers to a 194-204 Section 5, Division 2 victory over Laurel at Castle Hills Golf Course. Neshannock is the two-time defending WPIAL Class AA champion.
There were high stakes for the match, with the winner moving on and the loser being eliminated. The Spartans won the first meeting in a playoff after both teams were tied at 197 following regulation.
“This was a big match for both teams,” Lancers coach Mike Kirkwood said. “It was definitely a fun match.
“This is why the kids play and this is why we coach.”
Mike Maciarello was next for Neshannock (9-2 section, 10-3 overall) with a 37, Grant Weaver contributed a 39, Marcus Giangiuli shot a 40 and Marissa Kirkwood, the coach’s daughter, added a 42.
“I thought Cioffi and Maciarello did a nice job of stepping up for us this year and getting this team to come together,” Mike Kirkwood said. “It was good to see the kids working together to pull out a win when we really needed it.”
Nick Peluso paced the Spartans with a 38 and Shane Wilson was next with a 39. Ben Armando and Cody Crawford both fired a 42, and Joe Dantico added a 43.
Attempts to reach Laurel coach Steve Skerbetz were unsuccessful.
Shenango (11-1, 12-2) captured the section crown outright on Monday with a 199-223 win over Union.
On Monday, Marissa Kirkwood, a freshman, shot a 106 (52-54) in the girls individual WPIAL Championship. She missed qualifying for the PIAA western regional by seven shots.
“It’s a great learning experience for her,” Mike Kirkwood said. “She missed one fairway the whole day.
“Her approach shots were pretty good. But she had some bad breaks putting on the green.”
Union defeated Ellwood City Lincoln in a Section 5, Division 2 match at Rolling Hills, 232-248.
Jacob Jendrysik paced the Scotties (3-9, 5-9) with a 43, Cole Gorgacz was next with a 45. Joe Rossi added a 46, while Austin Burk and Michael Galmarini each shot a 49.
R.J. Leisie led the Wolverines with a 44, Michael Rue was next with a 48 and Derek Baker added a 51. Jacob Varrati posted a 52 and Justin Baney followed with a 53.
