EDINBORO — A promising season came to a sour end for the Wilmington High boys soccer team last night.
The Greyhounds mustered no offense and allowed two second-half goals in a 2-0 District 10, Class AA quarterfinal-round loss to Saegertown at General McLane High School.
Wilmington, the Region 2 champion, ends its season at 14-4.
“It’s a very disappointing way to end the season,” Greyhounds coach Christian Davoli said. “It was a great season for us. We had 14 wins and won a region championship. It’s just a very disappointing feeling.
“I’m definitely proud of the effort we put in. We never quit.”
Saegertown (14-4-1) will meet Harbor Creek today in the semifinals.
Wilmington had about four or five quality scoring chances in the second half but couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.
“We had an opportunity in the box, once, too,” Davoli said. “Their keeper made two or three great saves when it was 1-0.
“Nothing really developed into a scoring chance in the first half for us.”
The conditions weren’t ideal for the teams according to Davoli.
“The weather was a huge factor,” Davoli said. “There was a lot of rain and wind.
“The touches weren’t very good by either team, especially in the first half.”
The game was originally scheduled for Monday, but was pushed back to last night because of Hurricane Sandy, which was moving through the area.
“We didn’t get much practice time in this week,” Davoli said. “The weather hurt. But I think we were prepared for the game.”
The Panthers broke the scoreless deadlock when they scored on an ‘own goal’ by Wilmington with 30 minutes left in the game. Saegertown added an insurance tally with about a minute to play.
“We pushed everyone up late in the game,” Davoli said. “We were trying to create an opportunity and they got a breakaway goal.”
Derek Nichols made four saves in goal for the Greyhounds.
“I’m proud of everything we accomplished this year,” Davoli said. “We set a goal to win the region title and make a run at the district title and we did that.
“I’m happy to say we put the Wilmington boys soccer program back on the map.”
