The Wilmington High girls cross country team didn’t let the conditions bother them Saturday.
The squad just pushed through and qualified for the PIAA Championships.
The Lady Greyhounds scored 71 points, taking second place in the District 10, Class A Championships. The event was held at a muddy and soggy Buhl Park course.
West Middlesex won the district championship with 43 points. The top two teams in the boys and girls standings move on to Saturday’s PIAA Championships at Hershey’s Parkview Cross Country Course.
“I’m really proud of my girls,” Lady Greyhounds coach Mary Beth Acker told the Sharon Herald. “They went out and competed so hard (Saturday) and I could not be prouder of them.
“I think, on a day like this, what matters is being tough, and my kids ran tough (Saturday). It’s really hard, because in these conditions you run hard, but you really feel like you’re going nowhere and that’s discouraging. So it takes a strong person to be able to continue to push harder than the other kids.”
Rikki Brumbaugh and Allison Baldwin paced the Wilmington girls team. Brumbaugh placed eighth in 21:26 and Baldwin was ninth in 21:29. Kate Robb (16th, 21:53), Hannah Drake (22nd, 22:32) and Hannah Winters (25th, 22:41) completed the Lady Greyhounds’ top five runners.
Brumbaugh is making a return trip to the state meet.
“My kids all push each other, but I think they were in this for the team,” Acker said. “They were really focused on their team goals (Saturday) more than anything else, and they’ve been really focused on it since last track season, and they performed very well.”
Cambridge Springs’ Olivia Mamula won the girls Class A race in 20:40.
Wilmington’s boys team placed fifth in the Class AA race with 164 points. Grove City won the district title with 26 markers.
Zach Paden qualified for the state meet for the Greyhounds. Paden placed 20th in 18:32. Calvin Gealy (27th, 18:56), Jared Thomas-Masters (37th, 19:21), Derek Craig (39th, 19:27) and Brett Whitty (46th, 19:49) also participated Saturday.
Grove City’s Dan Jaskowak claimed the boys Class AA championship in a time of 16:23.
