NEW CASTLE — It was another record-setting day for Laurel High cross country standouts Ethan Wilson and Emily Maxwell.

Wilson and Maxwell set marks yesterday in a meet against Beaver Falls and host Ellwood City Lincoln.

Wilson finished first in the boys race in 17:02.4, breaking the old mark set by the Wolverines’ Eric McCall of 17:05. McCall’s mark was set last year.

“Ethan has been improving every week,” Spartans coach Greg Schmitt said. “He keeps showing signs of what is to come down the road. I’m looking forward to see how he runs in the future races.”

Maxwell broke the course record by 54 seconds, finishing first in the race in 20:01.9. The old mark was held by a West Allegheny runner, in 20:55.

“I thought Emily ran a great race,” Schmitt said. “The course was challenging. It was a hard course, to break it by 54 seconds says tremendous things about what she can do at the WPIAL meet and at state. She has a tremendous opportunity.”

The tandem broke school records last week in a meet against Shenango, Union and South Side Beaver on Laurel’s home course.

Laurel swept the boys meet, topping Ellwood (17-44) and Beaver Falls (18-45).

Clint Glenn was second for the Spartans in 18:52.7 and Lucas Switzer was fourth in 18:58.5. Edwin Cracraft (5th, 19:17.2) and Robert Schrantz (8th, 19:58.8) completed Laurel’s top five.

Tatsumasa Abe paced the Wolverines, finishing sixth in 19:42.9. Wesley Larry was seventh in 19:45.1, James Gajewski was 17th in 21:47.1 and John DeCaro finished 19th in 22:22.7. Glenn Truxel was 22nd in 23:32.9.

On the girls side, Laurel topped Beaver Falls and Ellwood by identical 15-50 counts.

Alison Filer finished second for the Lady Spartans in 22:32.2 and Brooke Dicks was third in 22:34.5. Vanessa Schwartzmiller claimed fourth in 23:33.9 and Kristin Dicks was fifth in 23:36.7.

Abigail Horton led the Lady Wolverines, finishing ninth in 24:29.0. Mallory Angelucci placed 10th in 24:34.2 and Paige Mason was 13th in 26:52.5.



Boys cross country

Kroner sets mark

Robbie Kroner rolled to a course-record finish for Neshannock in meets against Mohawk, South Side Beaver and Union.

Kroner won the race in 18:08.

Neshannock topped Mohawk (21-36) and Union (15-50), but lost to South Side Beaver (24-33). The Warriors lost to the Rams, 18-43.

The Lancers’ Matt Turner was fifth in 19:55 and Austin Moose took sixth in 20:51. Ron Calvert was 11th in 21:58 and Adam Alkhafaji took 19th in 23:49.

Sam Whippo finished seventh for Mohawk in 21:04 and David Kelty was ninth in 21:37. Jacob Hobel took 15th in 22:47, Dakota Lee was 17th in 23:28 and Matt Carran placed 18th in 23:49.

Adam Atwell placed third in the boys junior high race for the Lancers in 10:40 and Mohawk’s Matt Rudesill was seventh in 11:12.



Thomas shines

Wilmington’s Jared Thomas topped the field in a 15-50 verdict over Reynolds.

Thomas finished first in 18:36. Calvin Gealy placed third for the Greyhounds in 18:54 and Brett Whitty was fifth in 19:01.

Derek Craig was sixth for Wilmington in 19:33 and Zach Paden came in seventh in 19:54.

The Greyhounds’ Jake Burdett won the junior high race in 10:21.



Waldschmidt takes third

Shenango’s David Waldschmidt placed third in 17:57 against Beaver and Riverside.

The Wildcats’ Andy McCann was fourth in 18:00.

Shenango lost to Beaver (26-29), and beat Riverside, but a score wasn’t reported.

The Wildcats’ Matt Salem was third in the junior high race, but no time was available.



Blackwell delivers

New Castle’s soared past the field in a meet against West Allegheny. The Red Hurricane won, 22-39.

Blackwell won the race in 17:23.

Mike Mazzanti was fifth for the ’Canes in 18:27 and Alex Shepherd was 11th in 19:49. Chris Mazzanti (12th, 19:50) and Corey Niles (13th, 20:15) completed New Castle’s top five.

There was no junior high race.



Girls cross country

Brumbaugh wins

Wilmington’s Rikki Brumbaugh captured the race in a meet against Reynolds. The Lady Greyhounds won, 18-37.

Brumbaugh won the race in 21:04 and teammate Allison Baldwin was second in 22:03.

Hannah Winters placed fourth in 22:18, Hannah Drake was fifth in 23:36 and Kate Robb claimed sixth in 23:37.



Mohawk sweeps

The Lady Warriors defeated Neshannock and Union, both by 15-50 scores, and South Side Beaver by a 26-31 count.

Breyonna Wagner finished second for Mohawk in 23:46 and Mackenzie Moon followed in fourth in 24:44. Katelyn Byers placed fifth in 25:33, Joelle Bromley was seventh in 26:31 and Danielle Kelty claimed eighth in 26:43.

No girls participated for Neshannock.

Mohawk’s Ali Bredl won the junior high race in 12:03 and Neshannock’s Hanna Shaner was sixth in 12:42.



Lady Wildcats win two

Shenango’s Katie Bruce won the race against Beaver and Riverside in a time of 21:59.

Rachel Reamer placed fourth in 22:38 for the Lady Wildcats and teammate Courtney Fontana was fifth, also in 22:38.

Shenango beat Beaver (19-41) and Riverside (19-44).

The Lady Wildcats Brooke-Ellynne Waters won the junior high race, but no time was available.



Lady ’Canes lose

New Castle dropped a 18-45 decision to West Allegheny.

Andrea Lansdowne placed third in 22:33 and teammate Rebecca Paul was ninth in 24:28.

Rachel McNickle took 10th in 25:30 for New Castle, Natalie DeVincentis was 14th in 27:12 and Vanessa Turner took 15th in 28:12.

There was no junior high race.



Boys golf

Villani cards 34

Lucas Villani notched a one-under 34 to lead Shenango to a 191-200 Section 5, Division 2 victory over Neshannock at Sylvan Heights Golf Course. The win lifted the Wildcats into the WPIAL playoffs as well.

Matt DeAngelo delivered a 36 for the Wildcats (9-1, 10-2) and Darren Carone added a 39. Rocco Fiorill was next with a 40 and Tyler Settle chipped in with a 42.

“It was a big match for both teams,” Shenango coach John Dado said. “We have two matches left and if we win the next two we’ll be section champs.

“I thought Villani played real well. That was key for us. He was hitting the ball a lot better. Even Carone had a great round for us.”

Matt Cioffi paced the Lancers (8-2) with a 37 and Mike Maciarello contributed a 38. Max Watters supplied a 40, Marcus Giangiuli tallied a 42 and Marissa Kirkwood contributed a 43.



DeSantis paces Mohawk

Aaron DeSantis fired a 41 to lift the Warriors to a 231-236 Section 5, Division 2 win over Union at Mohawk Trails Golf Course.

Andrew Fee was next for Mohawk with a 42 and Anthony Bartolone added a 44. Samsan Needler contributed a 49 and Alex Scurlock was next with a 55.

Jacob Jendrysik and Cole Gorgacz both shot a 39 to lead the Scotties. Joe Rossi followed with a 49, Austin Burk was next with a 54 and Markel Peace added a 55.



’Hounds place fourth

Wilmington posted a 379, placing fourth in a  District 10, Region 2-AA mega match at the VFW Golf Course. Five teams competed in the match.

Josh Bonnici led Wilmington with an 88 and Collin Duffy delivered a 95. Matt Zimmer was next with a 97 and Shane McQuiston provided a 99.

West Middlesex won the event with a 344 and Hickory was second with a 349. Sharon was third with a 354 and Sharpsville was fifth with a 393.



Girls tennis

Neshannock competes

The Lady Lancers had seven participants, but no champions, in the Midwestern Athletic Conference Tournament at Brady’s Run Park. Three participants competed in singles action along with a pair of doubles teams.

A total of 16 schools competed in the tournament.

Neshannock’s No. 2 doubles team had the most success. The tandem of Arti Anna Ribarevski/Erin Warvell was seeded fourth and they defeated a team from Montour, 6-1 in the first round.

In the quarterfinals, Ribarevski/Warvell beat a team from Blackhawk, 8-3. But they lost to the top-seeded team from Mars, 8-3, in the semifinals.

The Lady Lancers’ No. 1 doubles team of Maria Acosta/Cecelia Weingart was seeded sixth, and they defeated a team from Ambridge, 6-1, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, they lost to the third-seeded team from Mars, 8-2.

In singles action, Neshannock’s Gabby Giangiuli lost to Ellwood City’s Reed Kegel in the first round, 6-0, at No. 1.

The Lady Lancers’ Meg Johntony lost to Gabbi Eaborn of West Allegheny, 6-4, in the opening round at No. 2.

Neshannock’s Brittany Moses lost to Kate Fierens of Blackhawk in the first round at No. 3, 6-2.

“That was good to get more matches under our belt,” Lady Lancers coach Chuck Dess said. “That’s only going to help us.

“I thought the doubles teams played really well and the singles players played really well, too.”



Wilmington wins

The Lady Greyhounds cruised to a 4-1 road win over Franklin in District 10, Region 1-AA action.

Alanna Elliott (No. 2) and Alexis Donati recorded singles wins for Wilmington (8-3, 8-3).

The doubles tandem of Nikki McCown/Lydea Kraynak (No. 1) and Rebeccah Swerdlow/Kaitlyn Meyers also scored a victory.
