Wilmington clinches region

Coach Christian Davoli never had seen his team beat Slippery Rock. That changed yesterday.

Wilmington (8-1, 12-1) edged the Rockets 2-0 in clinching the District 10, Region 3 title.

“It’s been my first time in six years,” Davoli said. “We worked hard and capitalized on our opportunities. We earned our record.”

The game was a tight back-and-forth battle that was tied 1-1 at halftime.

“Slippery Rock battled the entire game. They played hard all 80 minutes. They were giving us practically nothing.”

Marc Delio scored the game-winner in the second half on an outstanding individual effort.

“He read the play,” Davoli said. “He intercepted the ball, took it in, and beat the goalie with the great shot.”

Jon Clark got the Greyhounds on the board early in the first. Delio had the assist.

Keeper Ian Behm made 11 saves, including crucial stops in the final minutes of the game. It was a performance Davoli has come to expect from his netminder.

“At the beginning of the season, our starting goalie got hurt,” Davoli said. “He jumped in and stepped up. He’s really solidified our team.”
