NEW CASTLE —
The Wilmington High boys soccer team came alive in the second half Saturday.
The Greyhounds scored three second-half goals to earn a 5-2 District 10, Region 2-AA road victory over Hickory.
Jon Clark paced Wilmington (7-1 region, 11-1 overall) with three goals and an assist. Matt Balczon added two goals and an assist.
Marc Delio posted two assists for the winners and Andrew Sciuto added another.
Ian Behm recorded four saves in goal to preserve the win.
“We started off slow and we didn’t play well the whole first half,” Greyhounds coach Christian Davoli said. “I talked to them at halftime and they played much better in the second half.”
Wilmington has a one-game lead in the region standings over Slippery Rock (6-2, 7-6-1). The Rockets handed the Greyhounds their lone loss, 3-1, on Oct. 1. The rematch is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on Wilmington’s home field in the region finale.
Richards lifts Lancers
Neshannock’s Connor Richards scored the game-winning goal with eight minutes to go in a 1-0 Section 5-A road win over Quigley Catholic.
Jason Owery assisted on the goal.
Josh Maggi made 13 saves in net to earn the shutout.
The Lancers (4-8, 5-11-1) avenged a previous 3-2 loss to the Spartans (4-8, 6-10).
The Lady Warriors couldn’t muster any offense in a 2-0 Section 1-A loss to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
Mohawk is 7-6-1, 8-7-1. It was the section finale for the Lady Warriors.
Mohawk finished in fourth place in the section standings behind Sewickley Academy, Neshannock and Quigley Catholic. According to the WPIAL, the top four teams in each section in a classification with four or fewer sections qualify for the WPIAL playoffs. There are four sections in Class A.
The WPIAL playoff pairings are scheduled to be announced Wednesday and the playoffs are slated to start as early as Thursday.
