NEW CASTLE — Union wins

The visiting Lady Scots knocked off Western Beaver in Section 3-A action, 25-16, 25-15, 25-17.

Morgan Miller slammed 10 kills with three aces for Union (5-4, 6-6), while Tyanna Harris added 15 assists.

Christina Noble served up seven aces and Allyson Conrad posted five aces, four kills and four digs.

“The girls played really well,” Lady Scots coach Bob Miller said. “We’re kind of digging our way out of the hole (in section play) we got into in the early part of the season.”

The Lady Scots won the JV match, 26-24, 25-13.

Mohawk loses

The Lady Warriors dropped a marathon to Beaver in Section 1-AA play, 25-27, 25-13, 23-25, 25-16, 15-7.

Paige Ruby supplied nine kills and three aces for host Mohawk (1-6, 5-7), while Maria Fleck added six kills.

Shannon Verlotte delivered four kills and Samantha Carr added three kills and six digs.

Malea Tress provided 18 assists.

“They battled all the way through, each game,” Mohawk coach Britney Kwolek said. “We’re struggling with our energy and attitude right now. We’re not consistent with that. It has to be a team effort all the way.”

Beaver won the JV match as well, 25-21, 23-25, 16-14.

Maggie Cosgrove recorded five kills for Mohawk and Erin Giancola supplied three kills and six blocks.

Jess Meyer added 10 assists, four digs and three aces.

Girls tennis

Lady Greyhounds roll

Wilmington cruised to a convincing 5-0 road decision over Sharon.

Lauren Barber (No. 1), Alanna Elliott (No. 2) and Alexis Donati (No. 3) earned singles wins for the Lady Greyhounds (9-3, 9-3).

The doubles tandems of Katie Chase/Lydea Kraynak (No. 1) and Rebeccah Swerdlow/Kaitlyn Meyers (No. 2) also scored victories.

“The girls really stepped up and played well,” Wilmington coach Jim Arrow said. “I told them, we went up there one year and they beat us because we were overconfident. But they really stepped up and played well (yesterday).”
