Three county girls volleyball teams are ready to make a run at a WPIAL Class A championship.
The Laurel, Neshannock and Shenango high teams received their first-round matchups yesterday.
The Lady Wildcats (15-2) won the Section 1-A championship with a 12-0 mark. Shenango earned the No. 5 seed and will play 12th-seeded California (9-3) at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Mount Lebanon High School. California’s section record was the only mark available for the team.
The Lady Spartans (13-4) and Lady Lancers (10-6) will compete in preliminary-round action today.
Laurel will battle South Side Beaver (7-8) at 5 p.m. at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Neshannock squares off against Rochester (9-7) at 6:30 p.m. at OLSH.
The winner of the Lady Spartans-South Side Beaver match advances and earns the No. 14 seed. The survivor will meet third-seeded Bishop Canevin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Canevin in the opening round.
The Neshannock-Rochester victor secures the No. 15 seed and advances to meet second-seeded Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (15-0) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at OLSH in the first round.

’Hounds roll
Jon Clark scored three goals and added three assists for Wilmington in an 8-1 nonregion road win over Sharpsville.
The Greyhounds (14-2) led 3-0 at the half.
Matt Balczon added two goals for Wilmington, while Ryan Dilullo, Kareem Moufid and Jose Saez netted one marker each.
Marc Delio registered two assists for the Greyhounds and Dilullo added one.
Ian Behm made one save in goal to preserve the win.
Girls soccer
Mohawk in quarters
The Lady Warriors will play Seton-La Salle at 6 p.m. tomorrow at West Allegheny High School in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals.
Mohawk (9-8-1), seeded 14th, advanced with a 2-1 win over Bishop Canevin. The 11th-seeded Lady Rebels (8-10) moved on with a 1-0 victory over Neshannock.
Lady ’Hounds roll
Kyler Lum’s four goals powered Wilmington to a 6-1 win over visiting Sharpsville in District 10, Region 1-A action.
Lum also contributed assists on two goals by Anna Hartwell. Jillian Mickle and Rachael Huff had one assist each. Anna Miller made one save.
Winning 5-0 at halftime, the Lady Greyhounds put reserves in to gain playing time. Back-up keeper Allie Hahn made one save on two shots.
With the victory, Wilmington (8-1-1, 8-7-1) remains hopeful for a District 10 at-large playoff bid. The Lady Greyhounds play Fairview in a nonregion game Thursday.

Neshannock pep rally fires up students, community
A bonfire lit the sky last night behind Neshannock High School. The school was holding a pep rally to celebrate the season of its red-hot football team.

Laurel High’s Emily Maxwell paved the way for the county contingent competing at the PIAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday. Maxwell, a senior, placed fifth in the girls Class A race in 19:53.

The Mohawk High girls soccer team came up short in the WPIAL Class A consolation game Saturday. Shady Side Academy scored the game’s first five goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Lady Warriors at Baldwin High School.

A promising season came to a sour end for the Wilmington High boys soccer team last night. The Greyhounds mustered no offense and allowed two second-half goals in a 2-0 District 10, Class AA quarterfinal-round loss to Saegertown at General McLane High School.

Emily Maxwell was focused when she reached the finish line at the WPIAL Cross Country Championships last week. So focused, in fact, that she missed one important thing — she won. “It didn’t hit me that I won until making the tape,” Maxwell said.

Hurricane Sandy: Storm postpones playoff action
Hurricane Sandy got the best of the playoff action Monday night. District 10 and WPIAL postseason games were rescheduled as the storm began to unleash its fury. The Wilmington High boys District 10, Class AA quarterfinal-round soccer matchup against Saegertown was moved to 5 p.m. Wednesday at General McLane.

The Wilmington High girls cross country team didn’t let the conditions bother them Saturday. The squad just pushed through and qualified for the PIAA Championships.
